The wombat is a marsupial native to the forested and mountainous regions of southeastern Australia and Tasmania. With short legs and muscular bodies, wombats grow to approximately 40 inches in length and have sandy-colored, brown, grey, or black fur. They are the largest burrowing animals, using powerful forelimbs to dig extensive tunnel systems. Unlike most marsupials, wombats have a backward-facing pouch to protect their joeys from flying dirt while digging. An excellent example of convergent evolution, wombats share similarities with North American groundhogs, including specialized teeth for feeding on vegetation, and strong forelimbs with thick claws suited for burrowing.
