The vampire is a mythical creature known in folklore worldwide for feeding on the life essence—usually blood—of the living. In European tradition, vampires were undead beings who visited loved ones and caused mischief or death in their former neighborhoods. Historically, they were described as bloated with ruddy or dark complexions, quite different from the pale, gaunt vampire image popularized in the 19th century. Tales of vampiric entities exist across many cultures, with the term “vampire” gaining prominence in Western Europe after an 18th-century hysteria in Southeastern and Eastern Europe, where corpses were sometimes staked and people accused of vampirism. Regional names include shtriga in Albania, vrykolakas in Greece, and strigoi in Romania.
