Gorillas are the largest of the world’s primates, weighing between 300 and 400 pounds. Adult males stand 4 to 6 feet tall when upright on slightly bowed legs and may have an arm span over 8.5 feet, with a chest circumference approaching 60 inches. Though excellent climbers, gorillas are primarily terrestrial. Their large heads have prominent brow ridges, forward-projecting jaws, wide-set forward-facing eyes, small ears, and broad flat noses with widely flared nostrils. Each gorilla’s nose print is unique. Adult gorillas possess 32 teeth, including sharp, prominent canines—larger in males—and broad, flat molars suited to their tough, fibrous, primarily vegetarian diet.
