The name “dingo” originates from the Dharug language of the Indigenous Australians in the Sydney area. The first British settlers at Port Jackson in 1788 recorded dingoes living alongside Indigenous Australians, with the name first appearing in Watkin Tench’s 1789 Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay.

The dingo is a medium-sized canine with a lean, hardy build optimized for speed, agility, and stamina. Its coat varies mainly between light ginger or tan, black and tan, or creamy white. The wedge-shaped skull appears large relative to its body. Closely related to the New Guinea singing dog, dingoes’ lineage diverged early from domestic dogs, tracing back through Maritime Southeast Asia to Asia. The oldest known dingo remains in Australia date back approximately 3,500 years.
